SC MEETS WITH PNP

The Supreme Court met with the Philippine National Police this morning to discuss follow on actions regarding the March 23, 2021 statement of the Court. The statement highlighted the urgent need to use body cameras as well as serious concerns regarding reports of threats, harassments and killings of lawyers and judges.

Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo led the Supreme Court in the virtual meeting with Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief, Police General Debold M. Sinas and other key PNP officials.

The meeting, a virtual online courtesy call by the PNP top brass to the newly appointed chief magistrate, was also the first meeting between the incumbent Chief Justice and Associate Justices of the Supreme Court and the PNP.

Aside from the Chief Justice, also in attendance were Justice Marvic M.V.F. Leonen, Justice Alfredo Benjamin S. Caguioa, Justice Ramon Paul L. Hernando, Court Administrator Jose Midas P. Midas Marquez, and SC Spokesperson and Chief, Public Information Office Atty. Brian Keith F. Hosaka. Joining PNP Chief P/Gen. Sinas were the top senior officers of the PNP.

The meeting was productive as it gave the PNP the opportunity to share significant progress in addressing the issues raised in the statement of the Supreme Court. Also in the said statement, the Court asked the public to submit vetted information on any

incident of threat or killing of lawyers or judges on or before April 30, 2021. Both institutions committed to continue working together consistent with their mandates for the betterment of the Filipino people.
